New toys for CFR-Advanced

PHECC have brought out the new guidelines for the Cardiac First Responder - Advanced curriculum. This week has been the first time that RMI instructors have had a look at the new toys. The Supraglottic Airway, Suction, OPA and BVM are all part of the course.

The new CFR-A course is up and running as part of the PHECC Emergency First Responder course (EFR). RMI is helping to teach this six day course in Galway hosted by IATI. This is a non-wilderness based EFR course. The curriculum is straight from the PHECC CPGs and workbook.

One of the new toys available for the Cardiac First Responder and up is the iGel Supraglottic Airway. This device is very similar to the Laryngeal Mask Airway currently in use by Paramedics and Advanced Paramedics.
The difference between the LMA and the SGA is that the old LMAs had to be inflated. Some argue that this creates a better seal around the epiglottis. Clinical trials of the SGA have found that it it equal to the LMA. The difference is the ease of use.
